Entry Requirements

The School typically makes offers to applicants based on their achievement of certain grades at A level  (or equivalent qualifications). Entry requirements by subject type for the different programmes offered by the School are listed below.

BSc

A-level: grade A or B in physics and mathematics or viceversa and a B in any other subject except general studies.

International Baccalaureate: 32 points overall with 6 in both HL(Higher Level) physics and HL mathematics.

European Baccalaureate: 75 % overall 7/6 in maths/physics in any order.

Access to HE (Higher Education) diploma with speciality in maths, physics or science: 60 credits overall, to include 45 credits at level 3, with al least 30 at Distinction and 15 at Merit, which must include both maths and physics.

BTEC National Extended Diploma: DDD overall including: DDDM in any order in unit 1- Engineering Principles and optional, unit 7- Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems, unit 8 - Further Engineering Mathematics and  unit 28 - Dynamic Mechanical Principles in Practice.

MSci

A-level: grade A in physics and mathematics and a B in any other subject except ge neral studies

International Baccalaureate: 34 points overall with 6 in both HL(Higher Level) physics and HL mathematics.

European Baccalaureate: 80 % overall and 7 in both maths and physics.

Access to HE (Higher Education) diploma with speciality in maths, Physics or Science: 60 credits overall, to include 45 credits at level 3, with at least 33 at Distinction and 12 at Merit, which must include both maths and physics.

BTEC National Extended Diploma: DDD overall including: DDDM in any order in unit 1- Engineering Principles and optional, unit 7- Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems, unit 8- Further Engineering Mathematics and unit 28 - Dynamic Mechanical Principles in Practice.

Foundation Programme

A-level: Grade B in maths and physics and grade C in any other subjects.

We can accept students without A levels in Maths and Physics, however, we require at least a GCSE in Maths. Offers will then depend on the courses taken.

BTEC National Diploma: pass the BTEC National Diploma with MMM, Maths and Physics at M and M. 

Interview days

Once you have applied you will be invited to the School for an interview. This gives us a chance to meet with you and find out more about your interest in Physics and Astronomy and for you to find out more about the School.

The school holds Juno Champion status, the highest award of this IoP scheme to recognise and reward departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.
