Research in the School of Physics and Astronomy

Particle Physics

Research in particle physics in the School is concentrated in the Particle Physics Research Centre. Members play leading roles in major international experiments including ATLAS (operating at the CERN Large Hadron Collider), T2K and SNO+, as well as hosting a major component of GridPP, the Computing Grid that provides the computing resources for the LHC. PPRC Staff are listed in the People section of the PPRC site.

Theoretical Physics

Research in theoretical physics in the School is focussed in the Centre for Research in String Theory, and concentrates on the development of string theory and its many applications. Major areas of study include brane dynamics, string holography and duality, string cosmology, supersymmetric gauge theories and supergravity, and new applications of string theory to particle physics such as the structure of scattering amplitudes. CRST Staff are listed in the People section of the CRST site.

Condensed Matter Physics

Research in condensed matter physics in the School is focussed in the Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, and concentrates on understanding the fundamental physics properties of materials. CCMMP Staff are listed in the People section of the CCMMP site. This research covers many interdisciplinary areas and overlaps with work in biology, materials science, and chemistry.

Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Astronomy Unit has groups at the forefront of research in cosmology, planetary formation and dynamics, space and solar plasma physics, survey astronomy and stellar physics. Astronomy Unit staff participate in a wide range of international space missions and ground-based projects.
