REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO STARTED THIE COURSE PRIOR TO THE 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR (2014/15 AND EARLIER)

Levels

Each module is assigned a level that normally corresponds with the year of study.  Level four is the level of modules normally taken in the first year, level five in the second year, level six in the third year and level seven in the fourth year.  Note - for students who have taken the foundation year the year zero marks do not count towards any of the credit totals listed below.

Pass Marks

The pass mark for all level 4, 5 and 6 modules is 40%.  The pass mark for level 7 (MSci) modules is 50%.

Progression - BSc degree programmes

To progress from the first year to the second year you must have passed at least 90 credits at level 4.

To progress from the second year to the third year you must have passed at least 180 credits at levels 4 and 5.

Progression - MSci degree programmes

To progress from the first year to the second year you must have passed at least 105 credits at level 4.

To progress from the second year to the third year you must have passed at least 105 credits in the first year and at least 105 credits in the second year. You must have a second year average of at  least 60%. If you have a second year average of between 40% and 59.9% you will be moved onto the BSc programme.

Degree Award Regulations

To graduate you need to have achieved a certain number of credits and a College Mark above 40%.  The College Mark is a weighted average of all the modules that you have taken as part of your degree (excluding foundation-level modules).  Firstly you have to pass the following number of credits:

BSc - pass at least 270 credits.

MSci - pass at least 420 credits.

Once you have met the above credit requirements your College Mark is calculated as follows

BSc: ((First Year Average x 1) + (Second Year Average x 3) + (Third Year Average x 6)) ÷ 10 = College Mark rounded to one decimal place.

MSci  ((First Year Average x 1) + (Second Year Average x 3) + (Third Year Average x 6) + (Fourth Year Average x 6)) ÷ 16 = College Mark rounded to one decimal place.

You can use our degree calculator to work out how the marks you have achieved so far will affect your classification.

Once your College Mark is calculated you will be awarded a degree classification as follows

College Mark of 70% and above - first class

College Mark of 60%-69.9% - upper second class (2:1)

College Mark of 50-59.9% - lower second class (2:2)

College Mark of 40-49.9% - third class

College mark below 40% - fail (no award)
