Plasma Physics and Nuclear fusion

The project consists of working through equations of fluid dynamics and of charged particle motion in electromagnetic fields, which are relevant to plasma physics. Relevant textbooks are "Introduction to plasma physics and controlled fusion" by F. Chen and "Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion" by K. Miyamoto. In addition the student will be expected to read papers on developments in nuclear fusion technology over the last few decades, and to use the theoretical calculations to give a clear exposition of these developments. A good understanding of MT3 is a requirement for this project.

Causality and Analyticity in effective quantum field theories

This project will involve a study of constraints imposed by analyticity and causality in the low energy effective actions that arise in string theory and quantum field theory. The student will study  the paper hep-th/0602178 by Adams, Arkani-Hamed, Dubovsky, Nicoli and Rattazzi along with the background and follow-up papers to this.  The aim will be to understand and reproduce some of the key calculations in these papers.

Juno Champion

The school holds Juno Champion status, the highest award of this IoP scheme to recognise and reward departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.
