 Classical strings in curved backgrounds
String theory is based on the string.  Although the propagation of the string is more or less trivial in flat spacetime, it becomes very non-trivial in curved backgrounds, even at the classical level; for  example, it is known that it can show chaotic behavior.  In this  project, the student learns how to numerically compute the classical string propagation in curved backgrounds, such as anti-de-Sitter and/or black hole spacetimes, and explores various possible behaviors. Basic knowledge in computer programming is assumed.

Juno Champion

The school holds Juno Champion status, the highest award of this IoP scheme to recognise and reward departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.
