Attendance Policy

Attendance and Absence Reporting

The School is operating the following attendance policy from September 2013 for students in years one to three. Evidence indicates that there is a strong correlation between attendance at lectures and other module components and exam outcomes. The School wishes to maintain an attendance policy that clearly indicates expected levels of commitment by students to their work, whilst at the same time having sufficient flexibility so as not to impose unreasonable constraints. Externally imposed regulatory on the College now also require Schools to deregister students that are not attending modules.

The full text of the School's Attendance Policy can be found here and this should be consulted for full details. A summary of key elements of the policy is given below -

  1. Attendance levels at each module of 70% for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates, over a rolling period of 2-3 weeks, will be the expectation from the School. Attendance falling below this level will result in an email drawing attention to this, indicating what support we could offer with work or other problems and noting that continued poor levels of attendance will risk deregistration.  Excused absences would be excluded from the above requirements. Requests for these should be made via the online report form.
  2. Assessments will be monitored and students that fail to achieve above 40% for two or more assessments in a particular module, or fail a mid-term examination, will be contacted. Students with extenuating circumstances will be excluded from this, providing they have filled out the required documentation which then has to be accepted. Extenuating circumstances claim forms can be found here (under 'Exams, Assessments and Regulations) or outside room 110. Completed forms should be handed to Afsana Nishat or Leonie Dos Santos in room 110.
  3. Discretion will be used in the application of this policy for students near the borderlines of the requirements, taking into account an assessment of the real risk of a given student failing. Discretion could apply in cases where a student had good overall attendance levels and coursework outcomes, and a good previous academic record.

If you cannot access the excused absences form, or have concerns about any other matters to do with this policy,  please contact us. Feedback is helpful to us in order to ensure that we are responsive to student needs. You may contact  Harvey Abraham Green or Gary Welch who will anonymously pass any comments on to senior staff, or you may also contact your module organiser or advisor.
