Emergency Procedures

Accidents

All accidents should be reported to the College Medical Centre located in the ground floor, Geography Building. Minor accidents can be treated by the College's First Aid Personnel who are summoned by bleepers via the College Telephone Operator (see below). In extreme emergency an ambulance may be called using the telephone in the entrance lobby; dial 3333. Our location is:

Queen Mary, University of London

G.O. JONES BUILDING

Mile End Road, London E1 4NS

Fire

The fire alarm in the Physics Building is an unmistakable, continuous and loud high-pitched note.

If you discover a fire or a fire breaks out in your presence:

  1. raise the alarm by breaking the glass on the nearest fire alarm call point
  2. notify a member of staff of the location of the fire or, if no-one is nearby, notify the duty porter on the front desk of the Main Building, or any member of the College Security staff.

Should you hear the fire alarm:

LEAVE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY VIA THE NEAREST STAIRCASE AND EXIT.

DO NOT USE THE LIFTS.

IF YOU ARE IN A LIFT WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS, LEAVE IT AT THE NEXT FLOOR AND EXIT BY THE STAIRS.

All main staircases have exit points from the building; the assembly point is in the library square. If any route is blocked use an alternative exit. You should not re-enter the building until given permission by a member of staff.

First Aid

Trained First Aid Personnel can be summoned by the College Telephone Operator. Dial 3333, tell the operator you are in CENTRAL ZONE and the exact location of the person requiring assistance. First Aid personnel will be bleeped to attend.

First aid boxes are available in the 2nd floor laboratory, outside the Enquiry Desk on the first floor and outside the Stores on the Upper Ground floor.

Juno Champion

The school holds Juno Champion status, the highest award of this IoP scheme to recognise and reward departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.
