Student Prizes for Physics

Undergraduate students in Physics are eligible for a number of Prizes:

The GO Jones Prize

This Prize was founded in memory of GO Jones, former Head of the Department of Physics responsible for a major expansion and strengthening of the Department. It is awarded on occasion on the recommendation of the Head of School of Physics and Astronomy to a student whose main field of study lies within Physics, and who has exhibited a record of sustained academic excellence. The Prize was first awarded in 2011.

The F Alan Smith Prize

This Prize was founded in memory of F.A. Smith, a former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics. It is awarded on occasion on the recommendation of the Head of School of Physics and Astronomy to a student whose main field of study lies within Physics, and who has exhibited a record of continued academic excellence.

The Granville Prize

This is a University of London Prize awarded annually to the student whose performance in Final Examinations is judged by the panel of Visiting Examiners to be the most meritorious. All students of the University of London who graduate in physics are eligible.

The E.J. Wignall Memorial Prize

This Prize was founded in 1934 in memory of E.J. Wignall (1875-1933), a student of the former People's Palace Technical School at Mile End and subsequently Registrar of the College. It is awarded annually by the Principal and Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy to the student who has done the best work in the first year course in Physics.

The E.J. Irons Memorial Prize

This Prize was founded in 1966 in memory of E.J. Irons, a former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics. It is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School of Physics and Astronomy to the best all round student in the second year whose main field of study lies within Physics.

The Renishaw Prize

This Prize was founded in memory of Dr Alan Smith, Senior Lecturer in the Department t, Managing Director of Renishaw Transducer Systems Ltd., and Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics. It is awarded annually to the student who has carried out the best final year Project in the Department of Physics, involving experimental or computational techniques. The Prize may be divided.
